You can prove a lot about your next venture in two or three months, and you can prove a lot more with a top-tier developer on board. My name is Scott Drake and I'm a veteran of Microsoft and startups in Silicon Valley and my hometown of Louisville, KY.
After spending a few years away from startups and back working in the corporate world, I began to feel a lot like Dilbert so I jumped ship.
I now spend my time helping startup founders:
- Refine ideas and establish plans for their business
- Create software specifications and development plans
- Build early versions of their products and operational software
I am compensated in different ways for this work. In some cases, I'm a vendor that is paid outright. In others, I receive some pay and some equity in the new venture. In a select few, I work purely for equity. The terms I'll accept depends on the venture's needs, plans for the venture over the next 12 months, and how much I buy into the market and team.
When working for equity, I try to work with each startup for 2-3 months. That is generally long enough to give the founders the technical foundation to reach the next stage whether that's a round of funding or getting a product to market to begin establishing a revenue base. At that later stage, startups are better-positioned to recruit long-term development resources. When paid outright, I can work with ventures for as long as needed.
